Scoliosis Awareness Month: Signs, Symptoms, Treatment

Scoliosis Awareness Month

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month, which highlights the growing need for education, early detection and awareness about scoliosis and its prevalence. We talk a lot about scoliosis in our Overland Park family chiropractor office because it is the most common spinal deformity in school-age children. Approximately three million new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year with most being adolescent scoliosis, although we do treat many adults with this condition.  Scoliosis can affect infants, adolescents and adults of all races, classes, and all genders.

A healthy spine should have a natural, forward-and-backward curve that allows for rotation and bending. With scoliosis, the spine rotates and develops a side-to-side curve. Curves may be as mild as 10 degrees, or as severe as 100 degrees or more. In severe cases, scoliosis can cause health complications over time, which is why it’s important to diagnose it, halt it, and correct it as soon as possible.

Only two-thirds of states mandate or recommend scoliosis screening in schools, so it is important that friends and family members learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of the condition and know that help from their chiropractor is available. It is often parents or chiropractors who first identify the issue. Fortunately, there are simple ways to confirm the diagnosis and options for treatment that avoid surgery.

Signs of Scoliosis

  • Uneven hips and shoulders
  • One shoulder blade sticks out more than the other
  • Back pain and knee pain
  • Clothes fit awkwardly and hang unevenly
  • Abnormal gait pattern or limping

Symptoms of Scoliosis

Most commonly, chronic low back pain, although it can affect the entire skeletal system – spine, ribs, and pelvis – and the body’s nervous system. Depending on the curvature location, this could in turn impact other body functions, like digestion, reproductive health, breathing, and more.

Causes of Scoliosis

While the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown, it appears to involve hereditary factors because the disorder often runs in families. Scoliosis may also be caused by birth trauma, childhood slips and falls, adolescent sports injuries, etc. All cause curves to form and gradually worsen over time.

Correction of Scoliosis

The best way to detect scoliosis in all stages is through an exam and x-rays. Since it is a progressive condition, it is important to catch early. Scoliosis-specific adjustments help achieve and maintain curvature reduction. Chiropractic care is the first step in avoiding surgery and reducing the chance of life-long pain and issues.

Dr. Justin Grabouski specializes in scoliosis-specific adjustments and has had amazing results halting scoliosis and reducing the chance of life-long pain and issues. Schedule an appointment today in our Overland Park chiropractic office and get yourself and your kiddos checked!
